Watch: BJP MPs welcome Prime Minister amid chants of 'Modi, Modi'

New Delhi, Mar 14: BJP MPs on Monday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Lok Sabha amid chants of his name, celebrating the party's thumping victory in the recently held Assembly elections.

The prime minister entered the House minutes after the proceedings began and immediately all MPs belonging to the BJP gave him a standing ovation and thumped desks while chanting "Modi, Modi".

All Union Ministers, including Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, joined the ruling party MPs in welcoming the prime minister to the House. This is the first time that the House is meeting after the BJP's overwhelming victory in the recent series of assembly elections held in February-March.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and other opposition leaders were present in the House.

Bulldozing a resurgent rainbow coalition led by the Samajwadi Party, the BJP on March 10, stormed back to power in Uttar Pradesh, and also retained Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa.

While the BJP secured a majority in Uttar Pradesh, Manipur and Uttarakhand, the party will also be forming the government in Goa where it won 20 out of 40 seats and apparently has the support of three other winning candidates.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who addressed a celebratory gathering at BJP headquarters in New Delhi, hailed the victories as an "emphatic endorsement of BJP's pro-poor and proactive governance" and a "vote for political stability."

The outcome of the February-March Assembly polls, seen as a barometer to gauge people's mood ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP's showing also indicated that its handling of the devastating second wave of COVID-19 last year and the agrarian unrest over the three contentious farm laws, which were subsequently withdrawn, did not have a major impact on its electoral fortunes.

The second part of the Parliament's Budget session began on Monday.
